Using the Naviglio, a diversion canal dug in 1458, the Mantuans were able to drive the “hammers” which produced paper. Maglio, which means hammer in Italian, was actually marked on geographical maps with a lowercase initial at that time, indicating the installation of the hammering machine.
It is the site of the oldest paper mill in Italy, one which can be traced back to 1615. Even today the small village is identified with the Cartiera paper mill, and the houses which the entrepreneurs of the time built to house the workers in the 18th century are still inhabited.
